Aviation Control System

User Interviews • Persona Creation • Moodboarding • Sketching • High-Fidelity Mockups • Interactive Prototyping • Responsive Design

The Aviation Control System is a responsive platform developed for Ørsted to manage aviation logistics, integrating real-time weather data and supporting multiple user personas across devices. The MVP design was based on user interviews and tailored to meet the needs of both internal and third-party aviation suppliers.

Project overview

The Aviation Control System was developed to streamline Ørsted’s aviation logistics for transporting personnel and materials to and from offshore wind farms. With contracts involving third-party aviation providers, the system needed to integrate real-time weather data from met stations on the wind farms to aid in flight planning. A key requirement was building a responsive solution, as users would access the platform from both desktops and mobile devices, often while in transit or in-flight.

The challenge

The project had to address the complex logistics of Ørsted’s aviation operations, involving multiple personas with distinct use cases. Users required access to real-time weather data for safe flight planning, but also needed a solution that was responsive across devices, from desktop setups in control rooms to mobile phones used in-flight. This meant that the app had to maintain a seamless experience regardless of screen size or connectivity constraints. Additionally, since the domain was highly niche, extra research was required to create a relevant and functional design.

Deliverables

I conducted user interviews and created personas to understand the needs of both internal Ørsted users and third-party aviation providers. During the ideation phase, I developed moodboards and sketches to present design concepts to stakeholders. Following this, I created high-fidelity mockups and an interactive prototype that showcased core features, such as handling real-time weather data, error states, and responsive layouts. Additionally, I provided prototypes with detailed interactions, including pop-out windows and error state handling, to developers for implementation. Finally, I presented the MVP design in a comprehensive presentation for both internal and external stakeholders.

Results

The Aviation Control System was well-received by both internal Ørsted users and third-party aviation suppliers. The responsive design allowed seamless usage across different devices, meeting the diverse needs of users, from those in control rooms to those on the move. The user interviews and prototypes provided valuable insights that informed a more user-friendly interface, while integrating real-time weather data helped enhance flight safety and efficiency. The stakeholders appreciated the well-rounded design process and the system’s alignment with the specific demands of Ørsted’s aviation operations.
